 TO PRESENT NATIONAL HUMANITARIAN AWARD TONIGHT
 RALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Lung Association of North Carolina will present its National Humanitarian Award tonight to Bill Lee, president and chairman of Duke Power Company (NYSE: DUK).
 This award is given periodically to individuals who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to humanity and to the welfare of the citizens of North Carolina and the world.
 Lee will be honored at a dinner to benefit the North Carolina Children's Asthma Fund at the Marriott City Center in downtown Charlotte. More than 450 guests are expected to attend.
 "The Association has exceeded its contribution goal and raised approximately $214,000 to assist children afflicted with asthma," said Steve Willcox, executive director of the American Lung Association of North Carolina. "These generous donations demonstrate the community's appreciation of Bill Lee and its dedication to fight a disease that plagues 9.9 million Americans."
 Tonight, Lee will be honored for his dedication to worldwide nuclear safety, commitment to the environment and support of education.
 Bill Lee has significantly contributed to the advancement of consistent global operating standards for nuclear power plants. He was instrumental in the founding of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations and the World Association of Nuclear Operators.
 "His dedication to environmental and educational issues is demonstrated most clearly by the achievements of Duke Power," said Willcox. "Under Lee's leadership, the company serves as a model of environmental excellence and a catalyst for educational advancement."
 The awards dinner will be chaired by John M. Belk, chairman of Belk Stores Services. The honorary chairman of the event is Thomas H. Davis, founder of Piedmont Airlines and past recipient of the Humanitarian Award.
 Dinner co-chairs include The Honorable James G. Martin; Edward E. Crutchfield, chairman and chief executive officer of First Union Corporation; John W. Harris, president of the Harris Group; George Dean Johnson, general partner of WJB Video; and Hugh McColl Jr., president and chief executive officer of NationsBank Corporation.
 The American Lung Association is the oldest nationwide voluntary health agency in the world. The North Carolina chapter is dedicated to the control and prevention of all lung diseases and some of their related causes. The Association's public health education and research programs are supported through Christmas Seal donations and other voluntary contributions.
