 AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL GROUP ANNOUNCES EXPANDED
ENVIRONMENTAL UNDERWRITING CAPABILITY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
NEW YORK, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- American International Group, Inc. (NYSE: AIG) today announced that AIG Europe (U.K.) Limited will now have a dedicated environmental insurance staff in its London office. This capability positions AIG to further expand the market for Environmental Impairment Liability (EIL) insurance products in the United Kingdom.
To support that expansion, Graeme Merry has joined AIG Europe (UK) Limited, effective August 1, where he will be responsible for agency underwriting, sales and marketing of EIL insurance. AIG Consultants, located in Liverpool, will support the underwriting staff with dedicated environmental engineering services to aid clients in implementing safety and compliance measures.
Merry was previously with Aspinwall & Company Ltd., U.K.-based environmental consultants, where he was responsible for managing contaminated land, landfill and environmental audit projects. He has a graduate degree in environmental technology from the Imperial College of London, where he did postgraduate research for the Department of the Environment.
Brian Duperreault, president of American International Underwriters (AIU), AIG's international property-casualty insurance organization, commented, "This is an example of AIG's continued commitment to develop and provide products that address the environmental risks faced by our clients in overseas markets." Walter Mooney, President of Commerce and Industry Insurance Company (C&I), AIG's primary environmental insurance company, added, "C&I introduced the first EIL policy in the United States in 1979, and has been a leader and an innovator in providing pollution coverages in the United States. Now, in the face of growing environmental concerns and exposures in the U.K. and Europe, AIG is making available to clients outside the United States the innovative products and technical expertise that we developed for the domestic U.S. market."
This EIL coverage is similar to policies marketed in the United States but only recently sold overseas. It provides coverage for third party losses resulting from pollution conditions emanating from an insured site, with aggregate limits of up to $40,000,000 available.
AIG is the leading U.S.-based international insurance organization and the largest underwriter of commercial and industrial insurance in the United States. Its member companies write property, casualty, marine, life and financial services insurance in approximately 130 countries and jurisdictions, and are engaged in a range of financial services businesses. American International Group, Inc.'s common stock is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, as well as the stock exchanges in London, Paris, Switzerland and Tokyo.
