YPSILANTI, Mich., Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- An Ypsilanti resident was among three crew members seriously injured when a cargo plane crashed during landing at a U.S. Naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at about 5:25 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
David K. Richmond, 35, was the flight engineer on a DC-8 aircraft carrying cargo for the U.S. military from a base in Norfolk, Va., according to an announcement made by Conrad Kalitta, president of American International Airways, Inc., the plane's owner and Richmond's employer.
"We are still attempting to get details of the accident and our employees' medical condition, but it appears at this point that their condition is critical," Kalitta said. "The cause of the crash is unknown."
"Our attention is now focused on notifying and helping the three families. We are terribly upset, and our hearts go out to the families of these three fine employees," he said.
Company representatives have notified the employees' families, and a plane will be dispatched to Guantanamo Bay as soon as the base there re- opens tomorrow morning, Kalitta said.
Richmond has worked for the company since February 1991.
The other two crew members are Capt. James Chapo, 54, of Fayetteville, Ga., and First Officer Thomas Curran, 48, of Peachtree City, Ga.
All three crew members are highly experienced. Chapo and Curran are ex-Eastern Airlines pilots, holding Airline Transport Pilot Certificates, the highest licenses granted by the Federal Aviation Administration. Richmond is a licensed pilot, flight engineer and mechanic.
Additional details on the crew's medical condition will be released as soon as available, and a full investigation of the accident will be made, Kalitta said.
