AMERICAN HONDA EXPORTS ITS 100,000TH U.S.-MADE AUTOMOBILE

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 30 ~PRNewswire~ -- American Honda Motor Co. Inc. announced today that it has exported its 100,000th U.S.-made automobile since export operations began in 1987.
Honda began exporting U.S.-built Accords in 1987 when 667 units were exported to Taiwan. Honda was the first Japanese automaker to export its U.S.-made vehicles to Japan in 1988, South Korea in 1989, Israel in 1990, Europe in 1991, and Australia and South American in 1992.
American Honda currently exports U.S.-made Accord Sedans, Coupes and Wagons and Civic Sedans and Coupes to 18 countries in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. American Honda expects to export approximately 55,000 units in 1992, excluding Canada. The Accord Coupe and Wagon are built exclusively at Honda's Marysville, Ohio plant, while the civic Sedan and Coupe for export are made exclusively in East Liberty, Ohio.
American Honda is the second largest exporter of North American- made automobiles behind General Motors. In 1992, more than 11 percent of all the Honda automobiles produced in Marysville and East Liberty will be exported worldwide. Honda automobiles heading for Europe and Israel are exported from Jacksonville, Fla., while those bound for Asia and Australia are shipped from Portland, Ore.
The U.S.-made Honda Accord was the No. 1 American export automobile in 1990, 1991 and through the first nine months of 1992. The Honda Civic is the third most exported car built in North America through September of 1992, up from No. 12 in 1991. Additionally, the Honda Accord is the No. 1 U.S.-built car exported to Japan through September 1992.
Much of American Honda's growth in exports stems from manufacturing flexibility and the ability to produce vehicles to meet the differing requirements of individual countries. For example, left-hand drive Accords for the U.S. market are built on the same assembly line as right-hand drive Accords heading for the countries of Japan, the United Kingdom and Australia. Country-specific requirements -- such as lighting, drive train, suspension and emissions standards -- are also incorporated during the assembly process.
