AMERICAN HONDA EXPORTS FIRST CARS TO AUSTRALIA
TORRANCE, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The first shipment of

U.S.-manufactured right-hand drive Honda Accord Wagons to be exported to Australia left Portland, Ore., this week as the American Honda Motor Co. Inc. expanded its automobile export program to the Southern Hemisphere.
American Honda's plans for 1992 call for expanding the export effort to seven additional nations, including Australia and the Scandinavian countries of Finland, Norway and Sweden.
Honda began manufacturing right-hand drive vehicles at Marysville, Ohio, in January 1990 for export to Japan, and later for the United Kingdom. Currently, Honda is the only automobile manufacturer in North America manufacturing right-hand drive cars for export markets.
In 1991, American Honda exported over 27,000 right- and left-hand drive U.S.-manufactured automobiles to 10 nations. About 40,000 automobiles will be exported by American Honda in 1992, not including cars sent to Canada.
Initial plans call for the shipment of several hundred Accord Wagons to Australia, with subsequent deliveries consistent with market demand. Sales will begin in May through Honda Australia's dealer network.
Exports of automobiles produced at Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. in Marysville began in 1987. In 1988, American Honda began exporting the Accord Coupe to Japan and has steadily increased both the number of automobiles exported and the number of nations receiving them.
The Accord Wagon was exported to Europe for the first time in 1991; the Accord Coupe will be exported to Europe this year. Both models are manufactured exclusively in the United States.
The Accord was the No. 1 export model among all North American automobile manufacturers in 1991. Overall, Honda ranked as the third largest exporter of North American-made automobiles last year.
Since 1990, American Honda has been the No. 1 North American automobile exporter to Japan, with the Accord Coupe and Wagon together the top-selling U.S.-manufactured automobile sold in Japan. In 1991, 14,520 U.S.-manufactured Accord models were exported to Japan, representing 66 percent of the total number of North American-made automobiles exported to that market.
