AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS ELECTS CLIFFORD L. ALEXANDER, JR. BOARD MEMBER

 NEW YORK, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Clifford L. Alexander, Jr. has been elected to the board of directors of American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP), a leading manufacturer and marketer of prescription drugs, packaged medicines, medical supplies, instrumentation and foods.
 Alexander's addition increases the Company's board membership to 14. In announcing the election, John R. Stafford, AHP Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said: "We are very pleased to welcome Mr. Alexander as a new director of American Home Products. His extensive experience as a private consultant, as Secretary of the Army, Chairman of the EEOC, special consultant to President Lyndon B. Johnson on Civil Rights, member of several government panels, and as a practicing attorney, among other factors, make him well qualified for this position. His background will bring an important added dimension to our board."
 Alexander is President of Alexander and Associates, Inc., a private consulting firm which provides advice on Workforce Inclusiveness. He was Secretary of the Army from 1977 to 1981, and Chairman of the EEOC from 1967 to 1969. He was formerly a partner in the Washington law firms of Arnold and Porter and Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Alexander. He has also served on a number of U.S. Government panels.
 Alexander is currently on the Board of Directors of MCI Communications Corporation, the Dun and Bradstreet Corporation, the Dreyfus Third Century Fund, Dreyfus General Family of Funds and Dreyfus Premier Family of Funds, Equitable Resources, Inc., and Mutual of America Life Insurance Company. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the American Stock Exchange.
 He serves on the Executive Committee of The Yale Law School Association, the Board of Visitors at Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Michigan Committee for Institute of Public Policy Studies. He was elected to the Board of Overseers of Harvard University for a six-year term in June 1969 and has been an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown Law School and at Howard University.
 Alexander is a cum laude graduate of Harvard University and received an LL.B. degree from Yale Law School. In addition, he has received honorary degrees from Malcolm X College, Morgan State University, Wake Forest University, University of Maryland and Atlanta University.
 Alexander and his wife, the former Adele Logan, reside in Washington, D.C. Their daughter Elizabeth is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Chicago, and their son Mark clerks for the Chief Judge of the 9th Circuit District of the United States.
