AMERICAN HOME PRODUCTS CORPORATION ANNOUNCES THE RETIREMENT OF BERNARD CANAVAN, M.D., AS PRESIDENT

 MADISON, N.J., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Mr. John R. Stafford, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP), announced today the retirement of Bernard Canavan, M.D., 57, as President of the Company effective Jan. 31, 1994. "The Company and I greatly appreciate Ben's 25 years of exemplary service, but we understand his desire to spend more time with his family and pursue personal interests," Mr. Stafford said.
 Upon Dr. Canavan's retirement, Mr. Stafford will assume the presidency in addition to his current position as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer.
 "I have accomplished everything I set our to do, not only at American Home Products but in my professional life as well," said Dr. Canavan, "and I simply think it is time to relax and enjoy life."
