AMERICAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS AND ABBOTT LABORATORIES RENEW EXPANDED MULTIYEAR AGREEMENT

 ABBOTT PARK, Ill. /PRNewswire/ -- Abbott Laboratories (NYSE: ABT) has signed a multiyear multimillion-dollar contract with AmHS Purchasing Partners, L.P., an entity of American Healthcare Systems, one of the nation's largest healthcare alliances. This is a multidivisional expansion of the existing corporate partner relationship, committing AmHS hospitals to purchase Abbott products.
 The agreement, which begins Oct. 1, 1993, includes pharmaceuticals, drug delivery systems, medical nutritionals, infant formula, medical- surgical, critical care and anesthesia products. "It is much more broad based than AmHS' previous agreement with Abbott," according to Joy A. Amundson, Abbott vice president, corporate hospital marketing. "This expanded agreement provides an opportunity to significantly grow existing product sales. It also provides a strong foundation for new products to be added in the future. Discussions are already underway in new product areas," she said.
 "Abbott has brought innovative technology and productivity opportunities to our member hospitals. We know that this agreement will make AmHS Purchasing Partners and Abbott stronger corporate partners," said Lynn Detlor, president, AmHS Purchasing Partners, L.P. AmHS Purchasing Partners, L.P., is one of the largest group purchasing organizations in the United States, representing 15 percent of all community hospital beds in the United States with over 1,000 health care institutions and 39 limited partners nationwide.
 Abbott Laboratories is a worldwide manufacturer of health care products employing 49,000 people. In 1992, the company's sales and net earnings were $7.9 billion and $1.2 billion respectively, with earnings per share of $1.47.
 Based in San Diego, American Healthcare Systems is a for-profit corporation owned by one of the largest health care networks in the nation. Through its shareholders, AmHS represents over 1,000 not-for- profit health care facilities in 47 states, with combined revenue of over $28 billion annually.
