AMERICAN FOREST RESOURCE ALLIANCE ISSUES STATEMENT
PORTLAND, Ore., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was

issued today by Mark Rey, American Forest Resource Alliance executive director, on the introduction of a bill by Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., and Reps. Bob Smith, R-Ore., and Rod Chandler, R-Wash., to resolve the timber crisis in Washington, Oregon and northern California.
"The introduction of the Administration's northern spotted owl preservation plan by Sen. Gorton and Reps. Smith and Chandler is an important first step in what likely will be an acrimonious and difficult process toward congressional approval.
"But it is a necessary and welcome step for those in and out of Congress who are seeking balance for the owl and the old growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. It will be a particularly welcome step to the timber communities of the Pacific Northwest.
"While we regret that any jobs must be lost, we recognize that some sacrifices are necessary to conserve the owl. The bill does this in a way that keeps people working, keeps families and communities together and keeps forest products flowing to meet national demands.
"We applaud Sen. Gorton, Reps. Smith and Chandler and co-sponsors of the bill in the House and Senate, and promise to work with them and other concerned parties. This bill is a good start toward resolving environmental and economic issues on public lands in a balanced fashion."
