AMERICAN FOREST RESOURCE ALLIANCE ISSUES STATEMENT ON POSSIBLE LISTING OF MARBLED MURRELET

AMERICAN FOREST RESOURCE ALLIANCE ISSUES STATEMENT
ON POSSIBLE LISTING OF MARBLED MURRELET
PORTLAND, Ore., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued by American Forest Resource Alliance (AFRA) Executive Director Mark Rey in response to news reports that the marbled murrelet will be listed Monday as threatened under the provisions of the Endangered Species Act:
"The expected marbled murrelet listing Monday once again sets in motion a familiar scenario: special-interest attorneys threaten, federal agencies stammer and stumble, Congress procrastinates and working people get the shaft.
"Anyone who is even casually acquainted with the chaos associated with the northern spotted owl listing and recovery process, should shudder at the thought of repeating these steps as they apply to the marbled murrelet.
"Now there are some who revel in subordinating the lives of thousands to the purported needs of individual species and subspecies. But President Bush and the overwhelming majority of voters -- both nationwide and in the region -- support protecting wildlife and as well as hard-working men and women.
"Congress must reject the arguments of those who advocate the see- no-evil, hear-no-evil, speak-no-evil status quo approach to the Endangered Species Act.
"Instead, Congress should upgrade the unbalanced act to ensure that it protects not only the environment, but our economy as well.
"Only by amending the law to ensure that it balances vital people and species needs can we ensure that the law remains viable into the 21st century."
