AMERICAN FOREST RESOURCE ALLIANCE COMMENTS ON WIRTH AMENDMENT

AMERICAN FOREST RESOURCE ALLIANCE COMMENTS ON WIRTH AMENDMENT
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was issued by Kevin Brett, American Forest Resource Alliance (AFRA) vice president, in response to Sen. Timothy Wirth's "poison pill" amendment to the Forest and Families Protection Act (S-1156):
"What do Southern California deserts have in common with Pacific Northwest forests?
"The answer is that Sen. Wirth used a contentious desert protection measure today as a 'poison pill' amendment to block Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee passage of the balanced Forests and Families Protection Act.
"Sen. Wirth's antics today were nothing more and nothing less than a raw exercise of power politics in behalf of desperate environmental special-interest groups.
"These well-financed pressure groups knew full well the votes existed to move the Forests and Families Protection Act to the Senate Agriculture Committee.
"Their strategy was as cunning as it was transparent. They have adopted the scorched earth approach, blocking every reasonable measure, hoping for the election of a Democratic administration and a Congress that conceivably would be more favorable to their fondest dreams and fantasies.
"And the hatchet man for their dirty deeds is retiring Sen. Wirth -- the Clinton-Gore ticket's western point man. Based upon today's special-interest inspired maneuvers, is it any wonder why the general public is fed up with power politics and legislative gamesmanship?"
