AMERICAN EXPRESS CENTURION BANK LAUNCHES OPTIMA REWARDS

-- Optima Cardmembers Can Earn Points Toward
80 Exciting Experiences -- Just By Using the Optima Card --
NEWARK, Del., May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- American Express Centurion Bank has launched Optima (SM) Rewards, a new benefit which enables Optima Cardmembers to earn points towards over 80 exciting experiences -- just by using the Optima Card.
"Optima Rewards is a major part of our strategy to build the best credit card product in the marketplace and earn a greater share of our customers' business," said Frank L. Skillern, chairman and president, American Express Centurion Bank. "Optima Rewards and our performance- based pricing structure are specifically designed to recognize and reward financially responsible customers."
There is no additional fee to participate in Optima Rewards. All eligible purchases on the Optima Card from May 1, 1993 through April 30, 1995 earn one point for every dollar charged. Optima Rewards offers an exciting range of fine dining, sports, travel, and entertainment experiences starting at only 3,000 points. Some of the selections include:
-- A day of whitewater rafting for two or three autographed cookbooks by Chef Paul Prudhomme and a spice sampler (3,000 points)
-- Tickets for two to the Belmont Stakes in New York or the Toyota Grand Prix in Los Angeles (5,000)
-- An evening of food and wine for two at the Robert Mondavi Winery (10,000 points)
-- A Champagne Balloon Flight for Two, or dinner and a hockey game with the owner of the L.A. Kings (25,000 points)
-- Three days at Vic Braden Tennis College or U.S. Space Camp (75,000 points)
-- A private dinner party for 40 at one of five top U.S. restaurants, a choice of week-long getaways for two, or a four-day golf package for two at PGA of America (150,000 points)
-- A week-long cooking course for two at Ecole De Gastronomie Francaise Ritz-Escoffier in Paris, or a transatlantic cruise on the Queen Elizabeth 2 (300,000)
In addition to Optima Rewards, Optima Cardmembers can earn one of the best interest rates in the industry -- currently 12 percent for purchases. To obtain this low rate, Cardmembers must have both an American Express Card and an Optima Card for at least one year, make no late payments during a 12-month review period, and spend at least $1,000 on the Optima Card during that time. The annual fee for the Optima Card is $15 for Personal Card and Gold Card members, and complimentary to Platinum Card members.
"Optima Cardmembers do not have to increase their total spending to get the most from Optima Rewards," Mr. Skillern noted. "All they have to do is shift their spending to the Optima Card form their Visa Card, MasterCard or other high interest bankcard. They can save money, and Optima Rewards points will be earned even faster."
Optima Cardmembers' monthly billing statements will show the number of Optima Rewards points earned that month and in the program to date. Optima Rewards points may be redeemed through July 31, 1995 simply by calling 1-800-8REWARD.
Optima Cardmembers whose accounts are currently enrolled in the Membership Miles (SM) program have the option of continuing to accrue their Optima Card spending in that program or selecting Optima Rewards. Their other American Express Card accounts can still be enrolled in Membership Miles. Cash advances, balance transfers and certain other transactions are not eligible for Optima Rewards points. Full details are contained in the program's terms and conditions.
The Optima Card is issued by American Express Centurion Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Express Travel Related Services Company, Inc. (TRS). TRS, a family of travel, financial and communications businesses, is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Express Company (NYSE: AXP).
