AMERICAN EXPLORATION BEGINS DRILLING IN TUNISIA
HOUSTON, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- American Exploration Company

(AMEX: AX) announced today that a deep exploratory well with a planned total depth of more than 13,000 feet has been spudded in the El Jem license in Tunisia.
The El Jem No. 1 well will be drilled to a depth sufficient to test the Cretaceous section. The Abiod, Bireno and Zebbag formations of the Cretaceous are oil productive in fields to the immediate west and south of the 987,000-acre onshore El Jem license. The Lower Cretaceous Serdj formation is oil productive in fields further to the west. The well is located approximately 90 miles south of Tunis.
Exploration activities on the El Jem license are being conducted through a joint venture with Texaco Exploration El Jem Tunisia, Inc., as operator and 60 percent interest holder. American Exploration, through a wholly owned subsidiary, holds a carried 40 percent working interest in the well. The initial well location was selected to test a structure delineated after the acquisition of new seismic data during 1991.
American Exploration is an independent oil and gas company with production in the United States and Canada, and exploratory activities in North America, Tunisia, and the Sultanate of Oman.
