AMERICAN BUSINESS INFORMATION, INC. ANNOUNCES ITS INTENT TO ACQUIRE 80 PERCENT OF BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS & INFORMATION, INC.

OMAHA, Neb., May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- American Business Information, Inc. (NASDAQ: ABII) today announced it has entered into a Letter of Intent to acquire an 80 percent interest in Business Communications & Information, Inc. (BCI). BCI is a leading provider of continuing education and training programs to small and medium-sized companies and organizations. The company is privately held, and based in Kansas City, Kan. During 1992, it offered 1,700 training programs to more than 70,000 customers. Annual revenues for the 1992
calendar year were $7.3 million. Robert J. Eckholt, the current president and CEO, will remain with the company and will retain 20 percent interest after the acquisition.
"In the present marketplace, computer technology and availability of information have far exceeded the capacities of business executives. Unless business owners and executives learn how to use new technology and information to solve their marketing problems, the just can't benefit from all the available 'tools' that exist," said Vinod Gupta, chairman and chief executive officer of ABI. Gupta continued: "The days of door-to-door salesman are over. Businesses are learning the power of target marketing. By providing educational programs in business-to- business marketing, we can help businesses improve marketing efficiency. They will learn how to use modern tools to develop better marketing plans, and how to implement those plans to become more growth-oriented. Many fast-growing high-technology companies in the fields of computer software and hardware are now realizing that educating business people is very important in increasing the use of the products they sell.
"American Business Information has been a pioneer in providing business information in many forms to meet different business needs. The information is provided over the phone, via fax, from a PC, or in hard copy so that businesses can use information to solve their marketing problems. But educating our customers and prospects on how to use the information is critical. And the acquisition of BCI will help ABI to accomplish this goal. BCI will keep its current educational programs and offer additional new training topics in the marketing area."
American Business Information, Inc. is a leading provider of business information for marketing purposes. It has a proprietary database of 11 million businesses in the United States and Canada. The information is used by more than 300,000 businesses nationwide.
