AMERICAN BANKER NAMES ROSENBERG AS BANKER OF THE YEAR
AMERICAN BANKER NAMES ROSENBERG AS BANKER OF THE YEAR NEW YORK, Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Banker newspaper has
named Richard M. Rosenberg, chairman and chief executive of BankAmerica Corp., as Banker of the Year.
The award, the first ever by the 156-year-old publication, was presented to Rosenberg Wednesday at a dinner reception at the Plaza Hotel in New York. Also honored were 40 bankers under the age of 40 who are viewed as rising stars in the industry. "After a year in which the banking industry was besieged by a lot of bad news, we felt it important to recognize a group of bankers who are working to make things better," said Ed Finn, editor of the American Banker. The daily newspaper's top editors selected Rosenberg for the 1991 award in large part because he engineered the industry's biggest merger ever -- the pending marriage of BankAmerica in San Francisco and Security Pacific Corp. in Los Angeles. Rosenberg, 61, has also played a key role in helping BankAmerica rebound from serious loan problems in the mid-1980s. "The American Banker instituted the Banker of the Year award to identify the executive who had the most remarkable year -- who made the most news," said Finn. As for the 40 up-and-coming bankers, Finn said: "We cannot say for sure that they are the absolute best young bankers in the United States. But by all accounts, the 40 on our list are darn good -- and their careers bear careful watching." Following is a list of the "40 Under 40": John R. Bahnken, Fleet/Norstar, Providence, R.I.
