AMERICAN BANK NOTE HOLOGRAPHICS EMPLOYS TECHNOLOGY USED
SUCCESSFULLY AT DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IN NEW YORK
ELMSFORD, N.Y., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Security is an essential component of the modern Olympics, both to prevent terrorism and to prevent counterfeiting of tickets, and the security at the 1992 Summer Olympics, now underway in Barcelona, is being increased by holograms provided by American Bank Note Holographics, Inc.
Using technology it recently employed to supply holograms for the security credentials used by delegates and press at the Democratic Convention in New York, ABNH's holograms will be on every one of the approximately 6 million tickets in use at the 14-day event. The mass production of security holograms requires an intricate number of highly complex steps that cannot easily be duplicated, yet these three- dimensional images can be easily identified and authenticated, even at crowded events like the Olympics.
"The Barcelona Olympics are leading the way in the introduction of new security devices, procedures and programs," said Morris Weissman, chairman and CEO of ABNH's parent company, United States Banknote Company. "The use of tickets whose integrity is assured by holographic devices is a necessary step in stadium security, not just for the Olympics but for other major sporting events as well.
"There is no one point at which the sponsors of these events are so much at risk as with the ticket," he added. "Recent developments in off-the-shelf technology, particularly color copiers, allow any thief or would-be terrorist to become an instant counterfeiter of tickets or any other security document. A holographic security device is one of the most effective ways to stop that."
The ABNH hologram shows Cobi, the special mascot of the Barcelona Olympics, in colorful outline. The three-dimensional qualities of the hologram are combined with prismatic inks in the printing of the ticket to provide a document that is uniquely difficult to counterfeit, given the short time span in which the tickets are valid.
In addition to the Democratic Convention security credentials, ABNH holograms have been used to authenticate many brand-name products and documents, including credit cards, video cassettes, computer software, high-quality apparel, drivers licenses and all licensed products sold in connection with Warner Bros.' "Batman Returns."
ABNH, which is based in Elmsford, is the world's largest producer of security holograms.
