AMERICAN AIRLINES SELECTS SPS TO MANAGE PRIVATE LABEL CARD PORTFOLIO
RIVERWOODS, Ill., /PRNewswire/ May 11 -- SPS Transaction Services, Inc., (NYSE: PAY) ("SPS") today announced that it has been selected by American Airlines to operate American's 25-year-old American Airlines credit card. SPS will provide ongoing servicing including new application processing, transaction processing, billing, account maintenance, customer service, collections, funding and marketing support. As part of the agreement, SPS purchased the $36 million portfolio which includes 400,000 total accounts.
Said SPS vice president-sales Robert W. Archer, "I believe that our credit marketing expertise was a major factor in attaining American's business. American is a strong marketer, and SPS' experience in the specialized field of credit card marketing will support American's continued commitment to its credit card."
SPS' initial marketing efforts will focus on increasing card usage among current cardholders, Archer noted. Repayment terms are being extended and credit lines increased to allow cardholders to take maximum advantage of American's new, lower fare structure. SPS will cooperatively fund future card promotions to sustain growth of the portfolio.
American's private label card is designed for less frequent travelers who want to finance vacations without tying up the limits on their bank cards. It can be used to purchase American Airlines tickets, special vacation packages, upgrades and Admirals Club memberships.
Headquartered in Riverwoods, Ill., SPS Transaction Services, Inc., made its initial public offering in February 1992. Its principal operating subsidiary is Sears Payment Systems, Inc., a leading third- party provider of private label credit card programs with major clients in the airline, retail, office supply and petroleum industries.
