AMERICA WEST PILOTS VOTE FOR ALPA REPRESENTATION

WASHINGTON, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Mediation Board (NMB) today declared the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) as the winner in the ballot for union representation at America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC).
"With ALPA we have joined the most sophisticated and respected union in the airline industry," said Capt. Mike Martin, chairman of the America West Pilots Organizing Committee. "We anticipate that ALPA will ultimately help America West pilots gain a voice in our careers as well as in our airline's future.
"Our desire for representation was the logical next step in that direction," Martin said. "As responsible, professional pilots and loyal employees, we look forward to a cooperative relationship with our management and to fully realizing America West's potential as one of the country's great airlines."
The ballots were counted today in Washington by the NMB, which oversees airline representation elections. More than 75 percent of America West pilots voted for union representation. The vote was as follows: of the 1095 eligible pilots, 802 voted for ALPA, 28 voted for other representation, and four ballots were voided.
"The America West pilots have worked long and hard for this victory," said Capt. Randolph Babbitt, ALPA's president. "We are enormously pleased that they have chosen ALPA representation, and I think everyone recognizes the election outcome as a tremendous achievement not only for the pilots at America West but
for our profession as well. I congratulate the pilots' organizing committee for their commitment and for the 'high road' campaign they ran. I admire the fact that they have maintained a focus on their concern for the success of their company as well as for their careers and their future," he said.
America West, the country's ninth largest airline, is based in Phoenix and serves cities coast to coast. ALPA, chartered by the AFL- CIO in 1931, represents 44,000 airline pilots at 37 U.S. airlines. In addition to its union role, ALPA is the leading industry advocate for aviation safety.
