AMERICA WEST AIRLINES TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT ADDITIONS TO ROUTE SYSTEM

PHOENIX, Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NAA?Q: AWAQC) will make significant additions to its route system effective Dec. 15, 1993, in large part due to the expansion of its code sharing agreement with Mesa Airlines. Through this agreement, Mesa Airlines, operating as America West Express, will begin new service at Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, Iowa; Dayton, Ohio; Detroit, Flint and Lansing, Mich.; Milwaukee; Rockford, Ill.; and South Bend, Ind. America West Express utilizes an ultra-modern 19-seat Beechcraft aircraft.
America West Airlines also announced today that it will begin jet service at Indianapolis on Dec. 15 with three daily non-stop round trips to the carrier's Columbus, Ohio, hub and one daily non-stop round trip to its Las Vegas hub.
Reservations for America West's and America West Express' new service can be made beginning Nov. 1, 1993, through a professional travel agent or America West Airlines at 800-2-FLY-AWA (800-235-9292).
These service additions follow a recent announcement by America West Express to begin operations from Columbus to Akron and Toledo, Ohio; Indianapolis; Louisville, Ky.; and Rochester, N.Y.; on Dec. 15. Reservations for service at these cities began Oct. 25.
Michael J. Conway, America West's president and chief executive officer, said, "We are continuing to make the necessary routing and other schedule adjustments to optimize our revenue potential." He continued, "The expanded agreement between America West and Mesa Airlines is advantageous to both carriers but, more importantly, will benefit passengers through convenient and affordable air transportation."
The following is a summary of America West's and America West Express' Dec. 15 schedule additions (America West's jet service signified by +):
 Las Vegas - Indianapolis + Columbus - Indianapolis +
Columbus - Milwaukee Columbus - Akron
Columbus - Toledo Columbus - Indianapolis
Columbus - Louisville Columbus - Rochester
Columbus - Flint Cedar Rapids - Des Moines
Detroit - Rockford Lansing - Flint
Flint - Rochester Milwaukee - Cedar Rapids
Milwaukee - Flint Milwaukee - Indianapolis
Milwaukee - Lansing Milwaukee - South Bend
 South Bend - Dayton
"These additions will increase America West's Columbus hub operation from 31 daily departures to 65 daily departures, including 36 jet flights," Conway stated. "The addition of the new Indianapolis service, two new flights between Columbus and Florida, combined with several other minor service adjustments, necessitates America West's departure from serving the San Francisco/Orange County market on Dec. 15. We will continue to provide daily service at both San Francisco and Orange County; however, we are confident that the resources currently used between the two cities are better utilized for the jet service adjustments we have scheduled." Conway noted that passengers ticketed for travel on America West between San Francisco and Orange County after Dec. 14, 1993, will be reaccommodated.
America West also recently announced a third quarter operating income of $33.0 million and net income of $14.4 million, or $.54 per common share. For the nine months ended Sept. 30, 1993, the airline has reported record operating and net income of $75.3 million and $26.8 million, respectively.
Conway said, "America West's continued improvement is due to several conditions, including, but not limited to, the company's extensive cost reduction and revenue improvement programs. The service adjustments planned for Dec. 15 are a continuation of those programs that have proven to be successful as America West is one of only two U.S. major carriers to have reported a net profit in each quarter this year."
