AMERICA WEST AIRLINES REPORTS IMPROVED JUNE AND SECOND QUARTER LOAD FACTORS

PHOENIX, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) reported a significant improvement in its June 1993 load factor to 69.6 percent, compared to 64.7 percent during the same month last year. During June 1993, the company flew 1.4 billion available seat miles and 972.1 million revenue passenger miles.
America West also reported second quarter 1993 traffic of 2.8 billion revenue passenger miles on available seat miles of 4.2 billion, producing a passenger load factor of 65.6 percent. Comparatively, the airline reported second quarter 1992 traffic of 3.1 billion revenue passenger miles, 4.9 billion available seat miles and a passenger load factor of 62.9 percent.
Michael J. Conway, president and chief executive officer, said, "The June 1993 traffic figures are particularly pleasing in light of the fact that they are much improved over June 1992, a month in which travel was essentially sold at half-price due to a competitor's initiative." Conway attributed the improved traffic results to "the company's educated workforce and the growing confidence in America West by the traveling public and travel agencies. These factors are also key in the company's much-improved financial results.
"The streamlining efforts the airline has undertaken during the past two years has resulted in a far better matching of capacity with current demand levels in the marketplace. We estimate that these actions have placed us about 18 months ahead of the `power-curve,' as some of the nation's largest carriers are just beginning to deal with their own current overcapacity conditions," he stated. "The downsizing of our fleet from 122 to 85 aircraft has provided us with a tighter market niche and, combined with a series of affordable, yet rational fare initiatives, has resulted in a much-improved demand for our product."
