AMERICA WEST AIRLINES REPORTS DECEMBER TRAFFIC

PHOENIX, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Phoenix-based America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) reported its December 1992 load factor at 60.6 percent, a 1.9-point decrease over the same period in 1991. The carrier reported 0.9 billion revenue passenger miles and available seat miles of 1.5 billion, which represents decreases of 17.2 percent and 14.6 percent, respectively, compared to December 1991.
The airline also reported its fourth quarter 1992 traffic decreased 12.7 percent over the same period in 1991 to 2.6 billion revenue passenger miles. Available seat miles declined 15.0 percent over 1991 to 4.4 billion producing a passenger load factor of 58.2 percent compared with 56.7 percent for the fourth quarter 1991.
Michael J. Conway, president and chief executive officer, said, "Our December revenue passenger miles as well as a steady improvement in our yields were in line with our expectations. Our significantly revamped and downsized route system has resulted in the airline returning to a positive cash flow from operations and overall financial performance which is showing marked improvement year over year and over the third quarter."
