AMERICA WEST AIRLINES RECEIVES TRAINING CERTIFICATION FOR NEW A320 SIMULATOR

PHOENIX, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) announced that it has received Federal Aviation Administration certification to begin training its pilots on the carrier's new Airbus A320 simulator. The company will utilize the new simulator for both initial and recurrent pilot training.
James Carr, vice president of flight operations for America West, said, "The certification of our A320 simulator is a major step toward gaining more control over the efficiency of our operation." He continued, "This simulator will provide us with additional flexibility in training schedules, reduce our flight crew training costs, and enhance our ability to maximize revenues by generating pilot training contracts with carriers from around the world." Carr noted that America West will save nearly $1 million on its own A320 pilot training costs by June 1993.
America West now has four certificated flight simulators, including two Boeing 737-200 advanced models, one Boeing 757 model and the A320. "We anticipate that revenues from contracted pilot training will exceed America West's own pilot training costs during 1993," the vice president stated. "We currently utilize each of the other three simulators approximately 20 hours per day to accomplish our own training and contracted work," Carr added. America West uses the remaining four hours each day for maintenance. Carr said, "We expect to run a similar schedule with the A320 simulator as there are only a handful like it in the country.
"We are currently in the acceptance process for the certification of our fifth simulator, a Boeing 737-300 model," Carr stated. "The addition of this simulator will be a tremendous benefit as the 737-300 constitutes the majority of America West's fleet, and the airplane is also the most widely used of all commercial aircraft," he concluded.
