AMERICA WEST AIRLINES DISAPPOINTED WITH D.O.T. RULE
 ON COMPUTER RESERVATIONS SYSTEMS
PHOENIX, Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- America West Airlines (NASDAQ: AWAQC) expressed disappointment with the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) new rule regulating Computer Reservations Systems (CRS). The new DOT rule makes minor changes in the way travel agents deal with CRS vendors, but does not address any of the discriminatory practices used by the vendors against the non-owner carriers, such as America West.
Michael J. Conway, chief executive officer, said, "While we recognize that the rule does improve the operating environment somewhat for carriers like America West, it fails to address the issues of bias and supracompetitive booking fees that have been identified by the General Accounting Office and various federal agencies as the most fundamental problems. The abusive market power possessed by the large CRS vendors, as identified by the Department of Justice, has been left unchecked."
Conway thanked DOT Secretary Card for bringing to a close this half-decade-long process. However, the chief executive officer noted, "In the long run, consumer benefits from this rule will be marginal at best.
"America West would like to express its deepest appreciation to Sen. John McCain, without whose effort, it is unlikely any rule would have been published. We would also like to thank Congressman James Oberstar for his efforts in this regard." Conway concluded, "Both men have shown have shown themselves to be true consumer advocates when it comes to the provision of airline services."
