AMERICA SERVICE GROUP ELECTS SHAPIRO AS PRESIDENT OF PRISON HEALTH SUBSIDIARY

 NEW CASTLE, Del., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- America Service Group Inc. (NASDAQ: ASGR) announced today that Stuart H. Shapiro, M.D., 51, has been elected president and chief executive officer of Prison Health Services, Inc., effective Dec. 1, 1993.
 Prison Health Services, a subsidiary of ASG, manages health care services for inmates of correctional facilities under contracts from state and local governments. Shapiro also was elected vice president of ASG.
 "Dr. Shapiro is one of those rare individuals who has proven successes in both health care business and government at the federal, state and local levels," said Jeffrey A. Reasons, president and chief executive officer of ASG, in announcing the appointment. "His background in profitably managing multi-site health services combined with his experience in managing large public health programs, including prison health services, will help us maintain our leadership in the growing and competitive field of privatizing correctional health care," Reasons commented.
 Shapiro's extensive career in health care services combines private and public sector experience. He has served as commissioner of Public Health for the City of Philadelphia, deputy commissioner of Public Health for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and senior staff member of the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Health and Scientific Affairs.
 Shapiro also was divisional vice president of health care financing at First Pennsylvania Bank and most recently served as vice president of Nutri-System, Inc. He is a director of Penn Treaty American Corporation.
 Shapiro has taught at the Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, Georgetown University School of Medicine, and The Wharton Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania. He received an undergraduate degree from Syracuse University, master's degree from Harvard, and his medical degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine.
