AMERICA ONLINE SUBSCRIBER GROWTH RATE EXCEEDS 100 PERCENT; SUBSCRIBER BASE NOW EXCEEDS 400,000 HOUSEHOLDS

VIENNA, Va., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- American Online, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AMER), announced today that its subscriber base has grown more than 100 percent over the last year, now surpassing the 400,000 subscriber mark. Growth has been particularly strong in recent months; the company has added approximately 150,000 subscribers since mid-April.
"The word is getting around about the many benefits of joining America Online, and this enthusiasm is fueling our extraordinary growth," said Steve Case, president and CEO. "Most of our momentum is coming from programs that reach out and attract people who are new to online services. However, we're also pleased that many veteran online customers are now switching to America Online. This trend underscores our strengthening market share position."
America Online's rapid growth comes on the heels of recent reports of a decline in the subscriber base of Prodigy, the nation's largest consumer online service. "Prodigy has blamed its recent declines principally on seasonality," said Case, "but it is clear that a growing number of people are simply realizing that America Online is a better value."
Case attributed the subscriber surge to a series of strategic moves that together make it easy for consumers to try America Online and provide reasons for them to continue as subscribers. In the past year, the company has expanded OEM/bundling with most leading consumer computers, formed new strategic alliances with leading media companies, developed support of new platforms and devices such as windows and PDAs and switched to simple and affordable consumer pricing. The new pricing provides subscribers with five hours of use each month for just $9.95. By contrast, AOL's most popular services would cost consumers more than twice as much on Prodigy.
America Online, Inc., is the nation's fastest growing provider of online services to consumers. The company offers its more than 400,000 subscribers a wide variety of services, including electronic mail, conferencing, software, computing support, interactive magazines and newspapers and online classes. Founded in 1985, the company has established strategic alliances with dozens of companies including Time- Warner, CNN, Knight-Ridder, Tribune Company, IBM and Apple. The company completed an initial stock offering in March 1992. Personal computer owners can obtain the America Online software at major software retailers and bookstores or by calling 800-827-6364.
