AMERICA ONLINE CROSSES 250,000 SUBSCRIBER THRESHOLD: ANNOUNCES EARLY SUCCESS FOR WINDOWS, AND EXPANSION OF PARTNERSHIPS

VIENNA, Va., April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- America Online, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMER), announced today that it surpassed the 250,000 subscriber threshold earlier this month. This represents a growth rate of nearly 50 percent over the past year, making America Online the fastest growing service among the major consumer online providers. The company also announced that the Windows version of America Online is off to a fast start, and that Apple Computer, Inc., IBM Corporation and Tandy are now bundling America Online software with their consumer computers.
"With the rapid growth in our subscriber base, and new distribution agreements with the most popular computers for the home, America Online has solidified its position as the fastest growing online service," said Steve Case, president and CEO of America Online. "We are well positioned to take advantage of the encouraging market trends for consumer online services, and we will continue to invest in marketing, technology and service content so we can capitalize on opportunities to expand our market position."
America Online for Windows Off to Fast Start
The company also reported that the Windows version of America Online, launched in January, is growing rapidly. With more than 30,000 members already using the service, America Online for Windows is the fastest growing product in the company's history. PC Computing, in its May issue, said that America Online was "the first online service to do Windows right."
"We're very pleased at the early success of America Online for Windows," said Case. "This gives us a substantial opportunity to gain share in this important segment of the market."
New Distribution Arrangements with Apple, IBM and Tandy
The growing acceptance of America Online is resulting in more personal computer manufacturers deciding to bundle America Online software with their consumer computers. The company's new distribution arrangements are as follows:
-- Apple Computer, Inc., announced today that its Performa line -- the first in the Macintosh family of home computers to include a modem - - will now include the Apple Edition of America Online. This special edition of America Online will provide Performa purchasers with information and support directly from Apple, in addition to the standard services of America Online.
-- IBM announced earlier this month that its full range of PS/1 computers will now include the PS/1 Edition of America Online. This special edition of America Online for Windows features the basic support services offered on Prodigy, as well as exclusive PS/1 features such as real-time, interactive support and a special software library.
-- Tandy computers will now include the Windows version of America Online, a full-featured icon-based service that incorporates many of the popular features that have led to the success of America Online's DOS and Mac-based services. Featuring information and support directly from Tandy, America Online for Windows is now included in Tandy's full line of personal computers, including the acclaimed Sensation! computer.
America Online, Inc. is the nation's fastest-growing provider of online services to consumers in the United States.
