AMERICA ONLINE, TRIBUNE LAUNCH CHICAGO ONLINE
VIENNA, Va., May 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Chicago Online, a joint

venture between America Online, Inc., (NASDAQ: AMER) the leading independent provider of consumer online services, and Tribune Company (NYSE: TRB), a diversified media organization, is now available to personal computer owners.
This first "local edition" of the successful America Online interactive information and entertainment service will feature Chicago-area news, sports, and information about local entertainment and activities as well as classified advertising from the Chicago Tribune. Taking a cue from the national America Online service, Chicago Online will provide ample opportunities for Chicago subscribers to communicate with each other in conferences and by electronic mail. Subscribers of the Chicago Online service will also have access to the complete America Online service which features extensive software libraries which users can download to their PCs, computing support, online classes, and a variety of online conferences and forums for discussion.
Tribune's Chicago-area businesses -- the Chicago Tribune, WGN Radio and TV and the Chicago Cubs -- have participated in developing and supplying the information for Chicago Online. Local schools, businesses, community and cultural institutions have also been tapped for content contributions.
While the Chicago Online service targets home computer owners in the Chicago metropolitan area, America Online subscribers across the country will also have access to it to help plan business or personal trips to Chicago.
This local service utilizes America Online's proprietary, icon- based windowing software and is available in DOS, Macintosh and Apple II formats. The access software is available for free, with five free hours of online time during the first month. Thereafter, the pricing is $7.95 per month which includes two free hours of online time, with additional usage billed at 10 cents per minute.
Chicago Online is the first product of the strategic alliance between America Online, Inc., and Tribune Company announced last October. The alliance is the first in which a media company and a commercially successful online company worked together to develop local interactive services for consumers within a national network. The two companies also plan to launch local editions of the America Online service in other markets including Florida, where Tribune publishes newspapers.
Tribune Company is a publicly held company whose stock is traded on the New York, Midwest, and Pacific stock exchanges.
America Online, Inc., is the leading independent provider of online services to consumers and small business owners in the United States.
