AMERICA'S FAVORITE CHICKEN COMPANY RALLIES CONSUMERS IN FIRST WORLDWIDE FUNDRAISING PROGRAM FOR HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

ATLANTA, July 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Atlanta-based America's Favorite Chicken Company (AFC) announced today that it is launching the largest, most comprehensive corporate sponsorship of Habitat for Humanity (HFH), encompassing the first worldwide Habitat home-building projects.
Habitat for Humanity International is a volunteer-based organization that provides decent, affordable housing in a coalition with low-income families.
The new "AFC Dream Builders" program represents a commitment to raise more than $7 million for Habitat, provide the volunteer labor and build 200 homes with low-income families throughout the world over the next five years. The first home-building project will begin July 10 in Atlanta.
In an unusual partnership, the AFC Dream Builders program unites the company's two competing brands for a common cause. Church's Chicken and Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits restaurants will roll out separate grassroots fundraising programs for employees and customers later this year, each with distinctly different in-store consumer promotions, point-of-purchase materials and crew incentives.
"Our challenge is to give the 'American Dream' a new home," said Frank Belatti, chairman and chief executive officer for AFC. "AFC, Church's and Popeyes are proud to unite the efforts of our employees, and the resources of our company, to do our share to rebuild America, create new jobs and build homes in cities where we work and live," Belatti said. "Dream Builders gives us a powerful opportunity in which every member of our organization, and everyone we do business with, can make a contribution toward fulfilling the dream of affordable housing. But our work has just begun."
AFC already has been recognized by President Bill Clinton and former President Jimmy Carter for its commitment to build 200 Habitat homes throughout the world in the next five years.
"AFC chose Habitat for Humanity as its corporate cause-related program because both are international organizations that are committed to strengthening the communities where we live," Belatti said. "And we're both grassroots organizations. As AFC builds restaurants, we will build homes with our neighbors. Dream Builders is the cornerstone of that vision."
"This new campaign links the growth of Habitat for Humanity's mission around the world with the most comprehensive corporate sponsorship," said Millard Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International's founder and president. "This level of support is unprecedented."
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization dedicated to providing housing with low-income families and making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. HFH was founded in 1976 in Americus, Ga., and has affiliates in all 50 states and 35 developing countries around the world.
AFC is the parent company of Church's Chicken and Popeyes Famous Fried Chicken & Biscuits, the world's second- and third-largest chicken chains. More than 40 years old, Church's is a 1,074-unit fast-food chain specializing in southern-style chicken. Currently, the chain has 607 company-owned restaurants and 467 franchises in 30 states as well as Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Taiwan and Indonesia. Church's 1992 system sales exceeded $510 million.
Founded in 1972, Popeyes has 813 restaurants, 698 of which are franchised. In addition to the United States, Popeyes has operations in Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Panama, Jamaica, Honduras, Guam, Korea, the United Kingdom, Germany and Japan. Popeyes' 1992 sales were $580 million.
