WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- So you've booked the $23,000 presidential suite at the Ritz Carlton? Better keep your sunglasses on and register under an assumed name if you're hoping to court favor with President-elect Bill Clinton. Gov. Clinton already has set the tone that overspending and pretentiousness are out; all-American value and support of small business is in. Prominent Democratic groups have followed his lead by reserving rooms at several budget and economy Choice hotels in and around Washington for inauguration week.
The New Hampshire Inaugural Committee, which played a key role in Bill Clinton's campaign success, has booked 50 rooms at Choice's Comfort Inn Landmark in Alexandria, Va., for $65 a night -- including breakfast. The hotel offers no limos -- the Metro will do -- no room service -- a nearby coffee shop is fine -- and no health spas -- jogging shoes can go anywhere.
One hundred rooms are being held by the Democratic National Committee at Choice's Econo Lodge North on New York Avenue in the District of Columbia.
Other Choice hotels in D.C., Arlington, Va., the Mount Vernon area and Old Town Alexandria are booked by Democrats ranging from DNC members to high school marching bands from around the country.
"If the Clinton administration can manage the national economy with the same fiscally responsible zeal they have for finding value- oriented, affordable hotels, this country will be in great shape in no time," said Robert C. Hazard, chairman and CEO of Choice, the largest hotel franchisor in the world. "We market our hotels to people looking for exceptional value without a lot of bells and whistles, and the Democrats have responded well to our appeal." Choice is credited with introducing the limited-service hotels concept to the lodging industry.
For example, Comfort and Econo Lodge rates in and around Washington typically fall well below the set government per diem rate of $110. Even the rate at the all-new Quality Hotel Central on Connecticut Avenue -- which just completed a $6 million renovation -- is nearly 33 percent lower than the Hilton across the street.
Clinton is no stranger to Choice hotels, having stayed at the Comfort Inn in Erie, Pa., this past Aug. 23, while campaigning with Al Gore.
There are 45 Choice hotels in the metropolitan Washington area. A complete listing of the 12 closest in-town Choice hotels and their inaugural rates follows.
Choice Hotels International is the largest hotel franchisor in the world with nearly 2,900 hotels in 29 countries under the Comfort, Quality, Econo Lodge, Clarion, Rodeway, Friendship and Sleep brands. Reservations can be made by calling 800-4-CHOICE.
