AMC ANNOUNCES ONE-HOUR SPECIAL ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
AMERICA'S TWO FAVORITE PASTIMES: BASEBALL AND THE MOVIES

'Diamonds on the Silver Screen' Premieres Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m.

(Eastern), 9 p.m. (Pacific), Two Days Before Start of World Series
WOODBURY, N.Y., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The myths, the legends, the Americana, the lore and the actual sport of baseball as seen through the camera lens of Hollywood over the past 96 years will be explored in "Diamonds on the Silver Screen," a new American Movie Classics channel original special which is currently in production, it was announced today.
The one-hour special will premiere on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 8 p.m. (Eastern), 9 p.m. (Pacific), following the completion of Major League Baseball's National and American League Championship Series and before the start of the World Series (Saturday, Oct. 17).
In making the announcement, AMC Vice President of Programming and Production Bradley J. Siegel commented, "From Thomas Edison's 'Ballgame,' the first baseball film ever made (1896), to Kevin Costner having a catch with his dad in 'Field of Dreams,' Baseball has had major importance in the history of motion pictures. While there have been over 100 baseball movies produced to date, there are countless others in which baseball plays a significant role. This special will touch all those bases."
"Diamonds on the Silver Screen" will trace the development of the baseball movies from the early silent films that starred actual baseball players to the golden era of the B-Grade baseball films of the 1930s. The special will detail how the '40s and '50s were the era of the semi- biographical hero worship films, and how the '60s all but ignored the subject entirely. It wasn't until the mid-1970s, when "Bang the Drum Slowly" and "The Bad News Bears" were released, that the resurrection of the genre began. The 1980s and '90s have seen baseball movies become more popular than ever.
"Diamonds on the Silver Screen" will feature scenes from all the great baseball-related movies, including: "Pride of the Yankees"; "It Happens Every Spring"; "Pride of St. Louis"; "The Jackie Robinson Story"; "Damn Yankees"; "Take Me Out to the Ball Game"; "The Babe Ruth Story"; "Fear Strikes Out"; "Bang the Drum Slowly"; "The Natural"; "Eight Men Out"; "Bull Durham"; "Field of Dreams" and many others. The special will also feature new and exclusive interviews with the stars of many of the films as well as legendary ball players and baseball writers.
