AMBULANCE NURSES RATIFY CONTRACT, ACCORDING TO WASHINGTON STATE NURSES ASSOCIATION

SEATTLE, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Registered nurses (RN) at Shepard Ambulance Inc. overwhelmingly (94 percent) ratified a new three-year contract March 29, according to the Washington State Nurses Association (WSNA). This is the first contract for the nurses since they became represented by the Washington State Nurses Association about a year ago (the nurses agreed to delay negotiations until the agency completed negotiations with another union representing non-nurses).
The contract signals the end of seven months and 12 negotiation sessions -- three with a mediator -- for the 17 mobile critical care nurses.
According to WSNA negotiator Janet May, one of the nurses' top priorities was continuing education. The new contract addresses the issue with a $250 annual education reimbursement guarantee. Also of prime importance to the nurses was language that gives the nurses input into management decisions on nursing practice issues.
Economically, the nurses will average a 5-percent increase the first year, with cost of living adjustments in the second and third years. In addition the agency has agreed to pay a $2,000-per-nurse bonus for settling the contract.
Representing about 14,000 nurses, WSNA is the oldest and largest RN union in Washington. WSNA is also the professional association for registered nurses, providing continuing education, nursing practice expertise and legislative representation. WSNA is a constituent of the American Nurses Association.
