AMA BLASTS TOBACCO INDUSTRY TACTICS

 AMA BLASTS TOBACCO INDUSTRY TACTICS
CHICAGO, July 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement is

attributable to John L. Clowe, M.D., president, American Medical Association:
"For the second time in two years, a scientific panel of the federal Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that environmental tobacco smoke ('second hand smoke') is associated with lung cancer in non- smoking adults and respiratory disorders in children.
"There is a preponderance of scientific evidence to establish this linkage and the American Medical Association is today offering supporting testimony at EPA hearings in Washington.
"But in a cynical attempt to derail the EPA findings, the Tobacco Institute on Monday held a pseudo-science event at which they questioned in advance the EPA's findings.
"In its statements, the Tobacco Institute contends that exposure to the 4,000 chemicals -- including four dozen known carcinogens -- in tobacco smoke, is of no greater concern than exposure to the minute, naturally occurring chemicals in 'air, water, hamburgers -- even peanut butter.' The equation is simply misinformation, designed to confuse.
"When an industry, motivated by greed, tries to speak in the name of science, the public must beware. This is the same industry that continues to deny that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer in habitual cigarette smokers, a scientific fact established almost 40 years ago.
"In dealing with the tobacco cartel, we must remember that it represents industry -- not the health of the American public. That cartel is putting the lives of millions of Americans in deadly jeopardy.
"Americans can believe either an industry that kills 435,000 of its best customers annually -- or the U.S. Surgeon General, Environmental Protection Agency and thousands of researchers, physicians and health professionals. We believe the choice is clear."
