ALUM, CHICAGO FIRM GIVE WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF BUSINESS $1.5 MILLION

SEATTLE, April 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Washington State University (WSU) alumnus Gary P. Brinson and the Chicago firm Brinson Partners Inc. have pledged a $1.5-million gift over five years to WSU's College of Business and Economics to endow a chair in investment management, company and university officials announced today, according to WSU.
The donation will initiate a new option in the College of Business and Economics' finance department through the Gary P. Brinson Chair in Investment Management.
"We as a firm draw heavily on the academic community to provide us with ideas that may eventually turn into practical applications for portfolio management," said Brinson, the firm's president and managing partner. "Our motivation is to give something back to academia and to encourage and foster strength in research and teaching in finance and investments."
The new chair sends a strong signal of the increasing excellence of WSU's business programs, said Rom Markin, dean of the College of Business and Economics. The college has one of the largest undergraduate business enrollments in Washington.
For students, the chair holder will establish an undergraduate investment management option emphasizing quality teaching. He or she also will lead doctoral seminars and direct doctoral dissertations.
For the investment management community, the new option will provide better education and training for professionals entering the field. The chair holder will conduct research on investment management issues and maintain links with the profession.
"A gift of this magnitude is more than instrumental," Markin said. "It's a validation of what we have been and what we have become. This gift gives us the opportunity to ratchet ourselves to another orbit of performance."
A graduate of Renton (Wash.) High School, Brinson completed his master's degree in business administration at WSU in 1968 and lectured in finance and investments at the university from 1968 to 1970. He has become an internationally recognized leader in investment management and its growth in the global arena. He is the author of two books, including "Global Investing" published this year.
Brinson Partners Inc. is responsible for more than $26 billion in investment portfolios of some of the country's largest corporate and government pension plans, as well as prestigious foundations and endowments. The company has 200 professionals working in Chicago, London and Tokyo.
Private gifts are made to the university through the WSU Foundation.
