ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT SELECTS FIVE FOR FESTIVAL.

NEW YORK CITY--For choreographer-dancer Kevin Wynn, the stage door to the Joyce Theater has just swung open. Wynn isn't the only choreographer slipping through in January, however. Sean Curran [See pages 92-95], Lisa Giobbi, Sally Silvers, H.T. Chen, and Wynn have been chosen by the Joyce to perform in this year's Altogether Different Festival, January 5 to 17.

Now in its ninth season, the 1999 festival presents the five companies over two weeks, a slight cutback from its usual seven companies over three weeks. Linda Shelton, executive director at the Joyce, says the cutback is a result of increased bookings. Of the five troupes performing, two will be on return visits. Sally Silvers and Dancers makes its third appearance, and The Kevin Wynn Collection its second.

Wynn--who premieres two works, Skeletal Arrangements and To Repel the Demons--was surprised by the return invitation. "1 feel lucky to be part of it again," he says. "It's helped me solidify that this is the path I want to go down." The festival offers companies used to performing in smaller venues the opportunity to be seen in a high-profile, 472-seat theater. Choreographers and dancers view the festival as a chance to propel companies to the next level of visibility.

In addition to performances, the Joyce also offers management seminars for Altogether Different choreographers, in which they learn other aspects of the field, such as working with the press, obtaining music rights, planning a marketing campaign, finding a booking agent, and planning a budget. "They nurture you through a production," Wynn says. "You get lots of information for your future and are commissioned to do a new work."

The selection of companies for Altogether Different is based on creating a diverse festival, but it's also about finding up-and-coming performers who are ready to take that next step. "We're looking for companies that are ready to play to a larger audience," Shelton says. "It's sort of a bridge. Sometimes companies come out of the series and we present them [during the Joyce's regular season], or they present themselves." Altogether Different festival veterans include David Dorfman, Doug Elkins, Ronald K. Brown, Donald Byrd, and Jane Comfort, among many others.
