ALSTOM SIGNS CONTRACT FOR LAUSANNE UNDERGROUND.

The Swiss province of Vaud has just selected the French engineering group Alstom to supply the navigation system for the Lausanne underground rail network, worth some Euro 27 million. The choice of Alstom to supply the rolling stock, which comprises 15 carriages and two engine cars, for a total sum of Euro 56 million, has also been confirmed, Alstom said. The new metro will link up Ouchy, in the South of Lausanne by Lake Leman, to the borough of Epalinges in the North. It should be operational by 2005. The navigation system offered by Alstom, Urbalis, is an evolving system that enables, in its most advanced version, fully automatic, driver-less running of the underground system. Vaud will be free to choose between the different versions after analysing the various aspects of the project.
