ALPO SENDS PET FOOD TO HURRICANE AREAS
ALLENTOWN, Pa., Sept. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- When Hurricane Andrew

whipped through southern Florida and Louisiana, area pets were not spared.
ALPO Petfoods, Allentown, is shipping more than 173,000 pounds of dog and cat food to help feed the canine and feline victims of the storm.
ALPO had postponed its donation until now at the request of humane organizations in the affected areas. "We're hoping to avoid the logjam of initial supplies and lack of adequate storage facilities that many donors faced in the beginning," said Paul Davis, ALPO corporate transportation manager.
"The timing of ALPO's shipments is crucial," said Karen Medicus, executive director of the Florida Humane Society of Treasure Coast, acting general coordinator for the overall pet relief effort. "In the beginning, pet food donations were offered but there were no storage facilities. Much of that food was exposed to insects and to south Florida's rainy weather. We'll make sure ALPO's donation reaches area pets as they need it."
The first two truckloads carrying ALPO canned and dry dog and cat food, as well as dog treats, were shipped this week to the Animal Services Disaster Relief Warehouse in Miami. Additional supplies will be shipped next week. Three trucking companies -- Crete Carrier, Lincoln, Neb.; Alaplex, Birmingham, Ala.; and EXEL Logistics, Westerville, Ohio, are providing shipping free of charge.
According to Medicus, the ALPO donation's arrival coincides with the opening of south Florida's first tent city for pets. "ALPO's donations will help us to feed pets in this newly established kennel," said Medicus.
Donations of food will also be sent on an as-needed basis to the New Orleans S.P.C A. to help the pet-relief effort in Louisiana.
