ALPINE POLYVISION NAMES JOHN F. CATALANO
 SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT-OPERATIONS
NEW YORK, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alpine Group, Inc. (AMEX: AGI) announced today that John F. Catalano has been named senior vice president-manufacturing and marketing operations of the company's majority-owned subsidiary, Alpine PolyVision, Inc.
Catalano, 44, has extensive international experience in general management, manufacturing and marketing of flat panel displays and microelectronic components. He has served in senior management positions with N.V. Philips' Components Division in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, with manufacturing operations in Europe, the U.S. and the Far East. His responsibilities included Philips' liquid crystal display operations. Prior to that he was director of operations for Racal Display Products, a division of Racal Electronics Ltd., and was responsible for the manufacturing and marketing of advanced liquid crystal displays, including the development of active matrix displays.
Catalano began his industrial career, after earning a doctorate in solid state materials, in the early 1970's with the General Electric Company in Syracuse, N.Y. as project manager in charge of the manufacture of light emitting diodes and the development and manufacture of large area liquid crystal displays and drive electronic systems.
Steven S. Elbaum, chairman and chief executive officer of The Alpine Group, Inc., stated: "John Catalano with his worldwide experience in the display markets is a key addition to our management team at Alpine PolyVision, Inc. He will be responsible for operations, including the manufacture and marketing of low information content PolyVision displays and the scale up of our scheduled pilot plant to mass production capacity in 1993. The appointment is an integral step in the emergence of Alpine PolyVision as an operating company focused initially on introducing low information content direct and matrix addressed PolyVision display components to the flat panel display markets. The low information content segment of the total market is approximately $3 billion in size and growing more than 10 percent annually.
"Our Paris-based PolyVision research and development team will now increase its emphasis on the development of high information content PolyVision displays for the computer and video display markets. This segment of the display market is currently a much smaller segment than the low information content segment, but is expected to grow more rapidly through the 1990s, particularly when a flat panel technology emerges that can provide a cost and performance effective alternative to the cathode ray tube. We believe that PolyVision can provide the technology basis for this alternative and intend to exploit this opportunity, particularly as evidence continues to mount that the active matrix liquid crystal display alternative is proving too costly and technically too difficult to capture meaningful market share from the cathode ray tube in the foreseeable future."
Catalano, has a Ph.D in Solid State Materials from Syracuse University and a B.S. in Applied Physics and Electronics from Hofstra University. He is married, has one child and will be based at Alpine PolyVision's facility in Wallingford, Conn.
The Alpine Group, Inc. is a holding company with continuing operations in information display related businesses. Through its Alpine PolyVision, Inc. subsidiary, Alpine is developing PolyVision, a proprietary flat panel display technology, for commercial applications in a wide variety of markets. A recently acquired subsidiary, Dataproducts New England, Inc., specializes in the advanced design, development, engineering and manufacture of electronic and avionic components and systems. Alpine's information display activities also include Posterloid Corporation, which manufactures and markets menuboard display systems to fast food and convenience store markets.
