 ALPINE GROUP ANNOUNCES $7 MILLION CONTRACT AWARD
 AT DATAPRODUCTS NEW ENGLAND SUBSIDIARY
 NEW YORK, Aug. 3, 1992 /PRNewswire/ -- The Alpine Group, Inc. (AMEX: AGI) announced that its subsidiary, Dataproducts New England, Inc., was awarded a $7 million requirements contract on July 22, 1992, for Signal Termination Equipment (STU-5) from the Sacramento Air Logistics Command at McClellan A.F.B., Sacramento, Calif. The initial order release under the contract was $1.7 million. The balance of the contract is expected to be shipped over the next 24 months. Dataproducts New England is located in Wallingford, Conn.
 Steven S. Elbaum, chairman and chief executive officer of Alpine, said, "Dataproducts New England has made an important strategic and financial contribution to Alpine since its acquisition in February 1992. The STU-5 order release increases Dataproducts New England's bookings during the first quarter of this fiscal year to over $16 million, the highest quarterly booking in its history."
 Joseph Menniti, president of Dataproducts New England, said, "The STU-5, utilized extensively during Operation Desert Storm, interfaces various fixed 2-wire or 4-wire telephone equipment with standard 4-wire voice frequency channels. The enhanced version developed by Dataproducts New England adds the capability to interface with secure telephone and/or fax machines for tactical communications."
 The Alpine Group, Inc. is a holding company with continuing operations in information display and defense electronics and datacommunications businesses. Through its Alpine PolyVision, Inc. subsidiary, Alpine is developing PolyVision, a proprietary flat panel display technology, for commercial applications in a wide variety of markets. A recently acquired subsidiary, Dataproducts New England, Inc., specializes in the advanced design, development, engineering and manufacture of electronic and avionic components and systems. Alpine's information display activities also include Posterloid Corporation, which manufactures and markets menuboard display systems to fast food and convenience store markets.
