ALPA AND ALASKA AIRLINES REACH ACCORD

SEATTLE, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The negotiating committee of the Alaska Airlines chapter of the Airline Pilots Association (ALPA) and the airline jointly announced today the tentative agreement on a new 58-month contract, according to Alaska Airlines. The contract, subject to ratification by the union's master executive council, would run through Dec. 1, 1997.
"This agreement marks a real achievement in cooperation between labor and management," said Captain Jack Stockton, chairman of ALPA's master executive council. "Most importantly, this agreement saves existing pilot jobs and provides a mechanism for growth in the future."
Terms of the contract include retention of all 140 pilots who had been previously scheduled to be furloughed at the beginning of February. Alaska employs a total of 914 pilots.
Other terms of the contract include:
-- An immediate 5-percent decrease in wages during the first year of the contract.
-- A new flexible work hour program that contains a no-furlough provision while the contract is in force.
-- A program for expansion which provides for productivity improvements.
-- A new health care program.
 -- Improved retirement benefits.
-- Pilot participation in the Alaska Airlines profit sharing program.
"This agreement is a milestone," said Tim Metcalf, staff vice president of human resources. "It reflects a spirit of cooperation that helps assure the continued viability of Alaska Airlines."
