ALOETTE COSMETICS, INC. REPORTS 1992 RESULTS

WEST CHESTER, Pa., March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Aloette Cosmetics, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALET) reported today that income before the impact of a one- time charge related to the cumulative effect of an accounting change, was $1.2 million, or $.56 per share.
The one-time, non-cash charge of approximately $290,000 or $.14 per share, is for the adoption of new required accounting rules for income taxes (FAS 109). This charge resulted in net income of $912,000 or $.42 per share for 1992, compared with earnings of $2.0 million or $.84 per share for 1991.
Total revenues for 1992 of $21.1 million decreased 12 percent from $24 million in 1991, due primarily to the closing of the company's Canadian manufacturing subsidiary, currency translation losses and a general decline in sales to Aloette franchises.
For the fourth quarter of 1992, total revenues of $5.2 million were down from prior year levels of $6.4 million primarily due to the factors described above. Net income increased to $244,000 or $.11 per share from a net loss of $200,000 or $.09 per share in 1991. Comparative fourth quarter results were impacted by a provision recognized in 1991 for the relocation and consolidation of the Canadian manufacturing operations.
"Our decision to adopt FAS 109 puts this obligation behind us and, in conjunction with other initiatives we've undertaken to manage costs and increase revenues, positions us well for 1993. While our current sales volumes continue to reflect the trend experienced to date, we are cautiously optimistic that the steps we are taking will enable us to improve our long-term prospects," said Aloette's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patricia J. Defibaugh.
Aloette Cosmetics, a franchisor, direct marketer and manufacturer of skin care products and cosmetics, is headquartered in West Chester. As of Dec. 31, 1992, the company's products were being sold by approximately 100 franchises worldwide.
