ALLNET 'HELPLINK FOR HOMELESS' TELEPHONE LINE AT BAGLEY SHELTER A SUCCESS

BINGHAM FARMS, Mich., March 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Allnet Communication Services, Inc., a Bingham Farms-based long-distance service provider, has helped nearly 1,500 homeless individuals contact friends, family, job prospects or government agencies during the past month.
Allnet established the telephone line at The Salvation Army's Bagley Community Service Center in Detroit last month as a pilot program. "Allnet HelpLink For The Homeless" was established for homeless individuals to call anywhere in North America without charge, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The line averaged nearly 50 callers each day as word spread among neighboring shelters.
"We are extremely encouraged with the response to the program," Linda Busse, manager, public relations, Allnet Communication Services, said. "Those who used the line do not have regular access to a telephone or the funds to make a long-distance call. Some people would bring the want-ads in with them to inquire about various jobs. Many found work through the line or just called family out of state to let them know they were safe."
"The project served a definite need here," said Envoy Roy Johnson, director of the Bagley Community Service Center. "By spreading the word about the line to nearby centers, we serviced many who came to us just to use the line. We look forward to working with Allnet on the project next year."
The idea for the project came as an expansion of the Allnet HelpLink Hotline, a toll-free number the company has been providing as a public service for the last two years. Allnet HelpLink Hotline is designed to connect interested volunteers with non-profit organizations in need of help. By dialing "1-800-U-R-VITAL," callers can listen to messages from 25 different non-profit organizations requiring volunteer assistance or donations.
Allnet Communication Services, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of ALC Communications Corporation (AMEX: ALC). ALC is publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange (symbol: ALC).
