ALLIED-SIGNAL AUTOMOTIVE TO EXPORT AUTOLITE SPARK PLUGS TO NISSAN
 IN JAPAN
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Allied-Signal Automotive will supply Autolite advanced double-platinum spark plugs as original equipment to Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. in Japan.
The plugs will be used on a family of in-line 6-cylinder engines for Nissan vehicles to be built in Japan. Starting late this year, Allied- Signal Automotive's Filter and Spark Plug Group, based in Fostoria, Ohio, will supply an estimated 30,000 plugs per month for Nissan engines, according to Ralph E. Reins, president of Allied-Signal Automotive.
"Nissan has been a valued customer of Allied-Signal Automotive for many years," Reins said, "and we welcome this opportunity to expand our very productive relationship." Allied-Signal Automotive currently supplies Nissan with Garrett turbochargers.
The agreement marks the first use of Autolite platinum spark plugs on domestic Japanese vehicles, according to Robert Ruffin, vice president and group manager of Allied-Signal Automotive's Filter and Spark Plug Group.
According to Nissan's management, the automaker's selection of Autolite spark plugs demonstrates its commitment to customer satisfaction "by providing technologically advanced products with superb quality."
It also reflects Nissan's commitment to strengthen its cooperation with U.S. automotive suppliers. Nissan's goal is $3.7 billion in U.S. parts purchases by 1994, nearly triple its 1990 purchases of $1.3 billion.
Allied-Signal Automotive and Nissan engineers began working together on the spark plug program in November 1990. Through a series of test and development programs in Fostoria, and Yokohama, Japan, spark plugs have been custom-designed for the exacting requirements of the in-line 6-cylinder engines. A team of engine engineers at Nissan and a group of Autolite spark plug engineers continue to work closely to assure conformance to world-class standards.
The double-platinum plugs are designed to operate more than twice as long as conventional spark plugs, Ruffin said. They feature a platinum- tipped reduced diameter center electrode for optimum durability, thermal conductivity, and lower, more stable voltage requirements.
"The Autolite double-platinum spark plugs were developed for demanding applications such as motorsports and high-performance passenger cars and light
trucks," Ruffin said. "They are known for enhanced performance as a result of vastly improved durability."
One of the largest spark plug suppliers in the U.S., Allied-Signal Automotive's Filter and Spark Plug Group is expanding its business in Europe, Latin America and the Pacific Rim.
Allied-Signal Automotive, based in Southfield, is a business unit of Allied-Signal, Inc. (NYSE: ALD), an advanced technology company with business in aerospace, automotive and engineered materials, with headquarters in Morristown, N.J.
