ALLIANT TECHSYSTEMS AWARDED $59.7 MILLION CONTRACT FOR PRODUCTION OF M830A1 TANK AMMUNITION

MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) today said it has received a $59.7 million contract for production of the M830A1 MPAT (Multi-Purpose Anti-Tank) tactical tank ammunition round. The contract was awarded by the U.S. Army Tank Main Armament Systems (TMAS), Picatinny Arsenal, N.J.
The contract marks the first full year of production for the M830A1 round, which provides the Army's M1A1 Abrams main battle tank with a significant increase in performance against ground and air targets.
"We are pleased to be the sole-source producer of what we believe to be the most unique, multi-purpose tank round in the world today," said Ed Schmidt, group vice president, Defense Systems.
The contract calls for production and delivery of 18,000 rounds between February and November 1994.
Alliant Techsystems developed the M830A1 round in cooperation with the Office of the Project Manager for Tank Main Armament Systems and the U.S. Army's Armament, Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) at Picatinny Arsenal.
"This program is an excellent example of government-industry cooperation to ensure that the U.S. armed forces have the most effective weapons systems available," said Schmidt.
Alliant Techsystems is the largest systems contractor for U.S. Army 120mm tank ammunition, with more than 1.6 million combat and training rounds delivered since 1985.
Alliant Techsystems supplies defense and marine systems to the U.S. government and its allies. Sales for the fiscal year ended March 31, 1993, were $1.0 billion. The company is headquartered in Hopkins, Minn., and employs 5,000 people throughout the United States.
