DETROIT, Jan. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Mazda Motor of America today introduced its all-new 1995 Millenia luxury sedan at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Promising new levels of design, technology, safety, and quality, the Millenia will go on sale in Mazda dealerships this spring.
"We at Mazda feel the introduction of this exciting, stylish new luxury sedan could not come at a better time," said Kazuo "Sonny" Sonoguchi, president of Mazda Motor of America Inc. "We have just set our sixth consecutive passenger car sales record in the United States, and we are confident that the addition of the Millenia will help sustain our sales momentum."
Prices for the Millenia will begin at $25,995 for a car with cloth interior; $28,300 for a leather-equipped model; and $31,400 for a Millenia S. "The Millenia will sell from $4,000 to $10,000 less than comparably equipped models of the Acura Legend L, BMW 325i, Infinity J30, Lexus ES 300, and Mercedes-Benz C280," Sonoguchi said. "When engineers at Mazda developed the Millenia, they wanted it to deliver new levels of driving satisfaction, offer elegance with high quality, and display Mazda's commitment to social concerns through higher levels of safety and environmentally friendly construction," Sonoguchi said.
The Millenia lineup is offered in three models: The Millenia, the Millenia with Leather, and the Millenia S, which comes with the high- performance Miller-cycle engine. The Millenia and the Millenia with Leather are powered by a 2.5-liter V6 engine.
All Millenia models come standard with dual airbags, non-CFC automatic climate control, four-wheel disc brakes with an antilock braking system (ABS), four-speed automatic overdrive transmission, alloy wheels, an AM/FM/cassette stereo sound system, anti-theft alarm, power driver's seat, power windows, and power door locks.
The Millenia with Leather also comes standard with a power passenger's seat, a power glass moonroof, and a keyless entry system.
In addition to these features, the Millenia S comes standard with electronic traction control, 16-inch alloy wheels and tires, and the high-output Miller-cycle engine with a Lysholm compressor and dual intercoolers.
With its long list of standard features, options on all Millenia models are limited to a Four Seasons Package that includes traction control (standard on Millenia S); heated front seats and cold-weather improvements; a six-disc compact disc changer; and a Bose(R) audio system with a trunk-mounted six-disc compact disc changer.
The sleek, dramatic styling of the Millenia is in line with Mazda's recent design philosophy of providing cars that are expressive and emotional -- cars like the MX-5 Miata roadster, 929 luxury sedan, and RX-7 sports car. With its remarkable low 0.29 coefficient of drag, the Millenia suppresses wind noise and delivers added stability in crosswinds.
 Two Engine Choices
Two engines are offered: a normally aspirated 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, DOHC, 24-valve V6 and Mazda's new 210-horsepower, DOHC, 24-valve Miller-cycle V6 engine -- the first automotive application of this breakthrough technology. With the Miller-cycle engine, Mazda was able to enhance performance and fuel efficiency at the same time.
The Miller-cycle engine has already earned the Grand Award in Automotive Technology in "Popular Science" magazine's annual "Best of What's New" competition.
Both engines are mated to a smooth-shifting electronically controlled four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. This transmission automatically selects between Normal and Power shift modes, depending upon the rate at which the driver depresses the accelerator. A Hold mode is also included, which allows the driver to hold the transmission in each selected position for starting on slippery surfaces or climbing steep grades.
 Sophisticated Chassis
The Millennia features a sophisticated four-wheel independent multilink suspension that provides comfortable and refined ride with confident, secure handling. The front suspension uses a series of lateral and longitudinal links that behave much like a classic double-wishbone design. This multilink design allows each tire to remain in proper contact with the road surface, even over irregular surfaces, resulting in responsive steering and a smooth ride. The rear suspension also features multiple lateral links for optimal tire placement and toe control for stability at high speeds.
All Millenia models feature variable-assist power rack-and-pinion steering, which permits easier maneuverability at low speeds while retaining excellent road feel at highway speeds.
Every Millenia model is equipped with four-wheel disc brakes, with ventilated front rotors and solid rear rotors. A four-sensor, three- channel ABS system is standard. Also standard on the Millenia S and available on the Millenia and Millenia with Leather as part of the Four Seasons Package is an electronic traction control system. This system uses the ABS sensors to determine wheelspin. If wheelspin is detected, engine power is reduced by retarding ignition and fuel delivery, improving traction on slippery surfaces.
 Elegant Interior
The interior of the Millenia was designed to provide a comfortable and quiet environment for up to five occupants. The driver is greeted by a leather-wrapped steering wheel and a full complement of large, highly legible analog gauges. The instrument panel sweeps gracefully across the front of the cabin and houses dual airbag supplemental restraint systems. The non-CFC automatic climate control system, the audio system, and other functions are placed for convenient use by either driver or front passenger. All Millenia models feature a highly polished walnut inlay in the center console.
The seats of the Millenia are designed for optimal support and comfort with minimal fatigue. An eight-way power driver's seat is standard, while a four-way power passenger's seat is standard on the Millenia S and Millennia with Leather. Cloth upholstery is standard on the Millenia. Leather seating surfaces are standard on the Millenia S and Millenia with Leather.
Access to the spacious trunk is provided by a trunk lid that opens to bumper level for easier loading of heavy items.
 Solid, Durable Body
The Millenia's body was designed to provide a solid, stable platform for the suspension. Extensive computer analysis was used to reduce chassis flex and to engineer carefully controlled crumple zones that maximize safety in the event of an accident. With its rigid chassis and steel door intrusion beams, the Millenia meets the stringent 1997 U.S. side-impact standards.
Mazda went to great lengths to reduce the amount of noise, vibration, and harshness transmitted into the cabin. For example, rubber mounts for the windshield wipers dramatically reduced noise from the electric motors, while Teflon(R) bushings in the door, hood, and trunk lid hinges ensure lasting durability.
The Millenia reflects Mazda's concern for the environment, featuring CFC-free R-134a refrigerant, coded plastic parts for easier recycling, and no asbestos in the vehicle.
The 1995 Mazda Millenia is covered by one of the most comprehensive warranties in the industry. This three-year/50,000-mile, no-deductible, bumper-to-bumper warranty covers every part on the vehicle, except those subject to normal wear. The Millenia is also protected by a five- year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.
