ALL HONDA, ACURA MODELS TO HAVE DUAL AIRBAGS IN 1994 AS STANDARD EQUIPMENT

TORRANCE, Calif., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- With the introduction of the all-new Honda Accord this fall, all 1994 Honda and Acura passenger cars sold in the United States will be equipped with both driver's and front passenger's airbag supplemental restraint systems (SRS) as standard equipment, the American Honda Motor Co. Inc. announced today.
"American Honda will become the first mass-market, full-line automobile company in the U.S. to feature dual airbags as standard equipment on all passenger car models, from the least expensive Civic CX Hatchback to the Acura NSX," said Tom Elliott, executive vice president. "Safety has always been an important element in the design of our vehicles, and installing dual airbags on all of our models brings the benefits of this technology to a wide range of consumers."
Honda originally announced its plans to have dual SRS standard on all passenger cars sold in the United States by 1994 at a press conference at Detroit, in the fall of 1991. Currently, all Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the United States are equipped with a driver's side SRS airbag as standard equipment, with dual airbags already standard on many models.
Supplemental restraint systems (SRS) are designed to supplement the protection given by the standard three-point seatbelt systems for the driver and front passenger in frontal collisions. When sensors located in the passenger compartment of the vehicle detect a severe frontal impact, they send a signal that directs airbags placed in the steering wheel hub and the upper dashboard to deploy. The bags then deflate almost instantly after cushioning the occupants.
"Dual airbags are an important safety feature. However, the primary safety equipment in any car are the three-point seatbelts, which should be properly worn whenever a vehicle is operated," Elliott said.
