ALITALIA CONVERTS TWO OPTIONS TO FIRM ORDERS
 FOR THE McDONNELL DOUGLAS MD-11
LONG BEACH, Calif., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Alitalia, the national airline of Italy, has converted two options to firm orders for the McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) MD-11, bringing to eight the number of firm orders the airline has placed for the long-range, wide-body jetliner.
The two aircraft are planned for delivery in May 1994. Alitalia has three of the long-range trijets in service and will take delivery of two more this summer. The airline has also made other commitments for an additional five MD-11s.
Alitalia was a launch customer for the MD-11 in 1986 and was the first airline to order the MD-11 in a combi version, which allows for both passengers and revenue cargo to be carried on the aircraft's main deck. Alitalia is currently flying its MD-11s in an all-passenger configuration.
McDonnell Douglas has delivered 48 MD-11s since the aircraft received certification from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration late in 1990. In addition, the company had 127 firm orders for the MD-11 and 144 other commitments.
The MD-11 has flown more than 2.7 million passengers nearly 53 million miles since it entered service in December 1990.
The Alitalia MD-11 has an overall length of 201 feet, 4 inches and has a wingspan of 169 feet 10 inches. Alitalia's MD-11s are powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2 engines. The aircraft have a non-stop range of approximately 7,600 statute miles.
Alitalia is flying its MD-11s on routes between Rome and Los Angeles, Rome and Buenos Aires, and Milan and Hong Kong.
 Founded in 1946, Alitalia has flown many Douglas-produced commercial transport aircraft, including the DC-3, DC-4, DC-6, DC-7, DC-8, DC-9, DC-10, and MD-80.
