ALIGNING INVESTMENTS WITH SOCIAL ISSUES WILL BE A TOPIC AT SCHWAB CONFERENCE

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- "Socially Responsible Investing" will be among the many workshop topics at the Schwab National Financial Advisor Conference. The third annual conference, which will be held at the New York Hilton Towers at Rockefeller Center on Oct. 28 and 29, is designed for institutional investors who manage the money of individuals and institutions throughout the United States.
Sophia Collier, president of Working Assets Capital Management, Jerome L. Dodson, president of Parnassus Financial Management and George Kinder, principal of George D. Kinder Financial Services, will host a workshop to describe the benefits of Socially Responsible Investing on Thursday, Oct. 28.
According to these three professionals, socially responsible investing, which experienced acknowledgment and acceptance during the 1980s, will continue to be a market force in the 90s. The investing public has seen that moral factors as well as social and financial factors need to be determinants in portfolio selection.
As background for the workshop, Mr. Dodson refers to social factors and, "how they relate to financial criteria in picking stocks," for his funds. As examples he focuses on, "issues of environmental protection, equal employment opportunity, ethical business practices and community relations," among others.
Ms. Collier will describe, "the benefits of socially responsible investing from financial, social and marketing perspectives." From an investment manager's analysis, Mr. Kinder will discuss, "how socially responsible advising is compatible or incompatible with socially responsible investing."
In addition to this workshop, the keynote speaker opening the Schwab-sponsored National Financial Advisor Conference will be Jack Kemp, former HUD Secretary who promotes social policies to empower people. Paul Kennedy, Ph.D., professor at Yale University, will discuss global politics and their market implications. John Connolly, CFA, a partner at Miller, Anderson & Sherrerd, and ex-chief investment strategist for Dean Witter Reynolds, will speak on trends in the equity markets.
With the theme of "Windows on Wall Street", the conference will also feature workshops:
-- `Fundamental Analysis in a Chaotic Market Environment'
-- `Analysts' Approach to Selecting Securities'
-- `Fixed Income: Total Return Management'
-- `Investment Opportunities in the International Markets'
