BONO's wife Ali Hewson has plenty to be happy about yesterday after collecting an honorary degree for her work with children.

Ali was awarded the degree at the National University of Ireland in Galway along with Adi Roche, head of the Chernobyl Children's Project.

Both women were praised for "their extraordinary contribution to environmental issues" and for their work with the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Campaigner Ali, 41, has been instrumental in the children's project that helps young victims of the world's worst nuclear disaster.

So far it has delivered over EUR25million in medical aid to areas affected by radiation.

NUI Galway honoured four other people for their "remarkable and distinctive contributions to society".

The four included Sister Helen Prejean who tends to criminals on death row in Louisiana.

The book on her experiences, Dead Man Walking, was turned into an Oscar- winning movie in 1995.
