ALGERIA - July 5 - 11 Killed In Attacks.

Local media report 6 civilians and 3 Islamic militants were killed during a gunfight between militants and members of a local defence group in northern Algeria. 'Liberte' says the clash happened on July 3 night near Blida, 50 km from the capital Algiers. The paper says the civilians were part of a government-armed local defence group. They confronted the militants, who had entered the village to carry out a massacre. In a separate attack, 'El Watan' reports 2 police officers were shot dead in Tebessa, 650 km east of the capital. (An Islamic insurgency that broke out in 1992 has left an estimated 100,000 people dead in the North African state. The military has been unable to stop the violence despite peace efforts by Pres. Bouteflika and attacks occur almost daily.)
