ALEXIS DURGEE, 4, OF BOCA RATON, FLORIDA AND DALTON ORBAND, 2, OF GARDEN GROVE, CALIFORNIA NAMED LITTLE MISS AND LITTLE MISTER COPPERTONE

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- To celebrate the first day of summer 1993, Coppertone today named Alexis Durgee, 4, of Boca Raton, Florida, the new Little Miss Coppertone during a special event held here at the Polynesian Resort Hotel at Walt Disney World. And, for the first time ever, a Little Mister Coppertone -- Dalton Orband, 2, of Garden Grove, California -- was also selected.
The pair's win culminates a four-month photo/essay contest designed to celebrate the 40th birthday of one of the most recognizable and enduring icons in American advertising -- Little Miss Coppertone (she of blue bikini bottoms and frisky black dog fame).
Entry criteria included the submission of a photograph of the child in an outdoor activity where sunscreen would be used and a written statement about the importance of proper sun care. Children had to be between the ages of 6 months and 8 years old.
The first runners-up were also named: Leslie Fray, 3, of San Diego,
California and William K. Hoey III, 3, of Springfield, Missouri. In

May, 20 finalists were selected, 10 girls and 10 boys. Each won an all- expense paid family trip to Orlando's Walt Disney World.
Talk show host Regis Philbin was the event's master of ceremonies. Sitting on the five-judge panel were Cheri Brand, who, at age three, was the inspiration for the original logo, which was painted by her mother, Joyce Ballantyne; Mary Mohler, editor-in-chief of Parent's Digest; Doug Bailey from the Cassandra and Bailey Talent Agency in Orlando; Russell Elliot, vice president, Schering-Plough HealthCare Products and Rob Petersen, vice president, Messner, Vetare, Berger, Schmetterer and McNammee, Coppertone's New York ad agency.
Ms. Brand's presence at the event put to rest the pop culture legend that two-time Oscar winning actress, Jodie Foster was the original model for the logo. Foster did make her first-ever television appearance in a 1965 Coppertone commercial wearing a costume similar to the logo's with a dog at her heels, but was never involved in the creation process.
The two winners will appear in 1994 Coppertone advertising. The original Little Miss Coppertone will remain the official logo.
